These knockout designs are becoming really popular. They\u2019re popping up everywhere on Pinterest and Etsy and they\u2019re also really easy to make. I put together this little video showing you how to make a knockout in Cricut Design space. If you can\u2019t watch the video right now, here\u2019s a quick written tutorial.<\/p>\n

How to make a knockout in Cricut Design Space<\/p>\n

Step 1<\/h2>\n

Open a new project in Cricut Design Space. Add the text for your main word. In my example the main word is \u201cMOM\u201d. Make sure you\u2019re using a clear and basic font. I used Cake Basics font. You\u2019ll also need to make sure your word is in all caps.<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/h2>\n

Add the text you want in the middle of your main word. In my example I used the names of the children. You can use any font you\u2019d like for this part. I used the Mf I Love Glitter Font which I downloaded from fontspace.com.\u00a0 Please note, this particular font is for PERSONAL USE ONLY. You cannot use this font to make items you plan on selling. If you want to sell items using this font, you\u2019ll need to contact the font owner for a commercial license.<\/p>\n

Step 3<\/h2>\n

Weld together the words you\u2019re putting in the middle and set them to print in the layers section.<\/p>\n

Step 4<\/h2>\n

Click the \u201cMake It\u201d button as if you were going to make the project. You ARE NOT actually going to make this yet. Once your project is up on the mat you\u2019ll see the \u201cprint\u201d mat first. Go ahead and select \u201csend to printer\u201d. Again, you ARE NOT actually going to make this. Don\u2019t worry, it won\u2019t go to your printer. You don\u2019t even need to have a printer connected for this to work.<\/p>\n

Step 5<\/h2>\n

Once you have hit \u201csend to printer\u201d you\u2019ll get a confirmation screen. Make sure the \u201cbleed\u201d option is TURNED ON! This will make your words look like a big ol blob and that is exactly what you want. From here, right-click on the blob of letters and select \u201csave image as\u201d. Name your image and select a folder to save it to. (I named mine blob and saved it to my desktop.) Then you can exit out of the print and cancel the cut.<\/p>\n

Step 6<\/h2>\n

Once you have canceled the cut and you\u2019re back in your project you\u2019ll want to pull in the image you just saved. Click the \u201cUpload\u201d button and select \u201cupload image\u201d. Find your blob image and upload it into design space. You\u2019ll select \u201csimple image\u201d and then delete everything in the image except the blob of words. (Just keep clicking the lines of the box until they all disappear.)\u00a0 Save this as a \u201ccut image\u201d and insert it into your project.<\/p>\n

Step 7<\/h2>\n

Now it\u2019s time for some positioning. I like to make each layer a different color so it\u2019s easy to see what I\u2019m working with.\u00a0 I turn the main word black, the blob text pink and the actual text blue. Size the main word to the size you want it on your final project. Pull your actual text up to the middle of your main word and position it exactly how you want it to look on your final project. Then you\u2019ll need to rotate the blob text and pull it up to the main word as well. Arrange the blob text to be behind the actual text. Continue to resize and position the blob text until you get it perfectly aligned behind your actual text.<\/p>\n

Step 8<\/h2>\n

Pull your actual text out leaving only your main word and the blob text together. Select both the main word and the blob text and hit \u201cslice\u201d.\u00a0 This will cut the blob out of the main text.\u00a0 Go to the layers panel and delete all of the blob text including the part remaining in the middle of the main word. Once it is all removed you should see a gap between the top and the bottom of your main word.<\/p>\n

Step 9<\/h2>\n

Move your actual text back up into the gap in your main word and position it to the exact position you want.\u00a0 Set the actual text back to cut and you\u2019re ready to cut your project. If you plan on making the whole project one color, weld it all together. If you\u2019re making it 2 separate colors, keep it as is.<\/p>\n
