So you\u2019re thinking about starting an Etsy shop or maybe you already have.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been there and I want to share with you 5 things you simply must understand and accept before you can have a successful Etsy shop. This post is a bit detailed but I promise when you\u2019re done with it you\u2019ll have a clear understanding of just what it takes to run a successful Etsy shop so let\u2019s dive in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are other people making the same things as you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Etsy has millions of shops.\u00a0\nThat\u2019s millions of people selling any kind of handmade or vintage item\nyou can think of. You may make something super unique but I promise you someone\nelse makes it too and they already have an Etsy shop. If what you\u2019re making or\nselling isn\u2019t unique then you have even more competition. Know this and accept\nit if you want to have a successful Etsy shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now just because there\u2019s competition does not mean you\ncannot be successful on Etsy.\u00a0 I sell\nvinyl decals and SVG files.\u00a0 The market\nfor this is crazy saturated and I still make a fulltime income selling on Etsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will not happen overnight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I cannot stress this point enough.\u00a0 If you expect to put a few items up on Etsy\none day and start watching the money roll in\u2026.just stop now.\u00a0 Unless you\u2019re the unicorn of Etsy, that rare\n1% of shops that are an overnight success (and it does happen occasionally)\nthen you are going to have to put in some work. Actually, not just some work\nbut a lot of work.\u00a0 It takes a good deal\nof time to create a successful Etsy shop.\u00a0\u00a0\nKnow this and accept this before you start your Etsy shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etsy has an algorithm that has to learn you and your items\nand then there\u2019s Google with its own algorithm.\u00a0\nYou need both Etsy and Google showing your listings to potential\ncustomers before you can start making real money on Etsy.\u00a0 Stick with it and little by little you\u2019ll see\nyour orders and revenue increase. Give up after a few months and you\u2019ll never\nknow what your Etsy shop could have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s an online course<\/a> that is super detailed (it\u2019s actually 3 courses bundled together) that will teach you everything you need to know to set your shop up for success right from the jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photography is important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Photography is the make it or break it component for your\nEtsy shop. You may be rocking your Etsy listings with great keywords and\ndescriptions. You may be offering the most sought after products. You might have\nthe absolute best customer service and super competitive prices but if your\nphotography is subpar, you are not going to make sales.\u00a0 You want to have a successful Etsy shop then\nyou have to have good listing photos.\u00a0 My\nadvice is to take a few online photography courses and make sure you have\neverything you need to take good photos or make good mockups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found this course<\/a> to be one of the best because it caters to crafters needing to take photos of their items to list online\u2026and well\u2026that\u2019s exactly what Etsy is all about.\u00a0\u00a0 I also have this post on how to make mockups if you\u2019re offering digital listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you skimp on photography you will be setting yourself WAY\nback. Know this and accept it before you start your Etsy shop.\u00a0 Set photo standards for yourself from the\nstart and stick with them.\u00a0 It\u2019s really\nhard to go back and redo the photography for your shop a year later once you\ndecide to learn more about photography (just ask me how I know).\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to pay to play <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This topic is a bit controversial.\u00a0 You\u2019ll see people both for and against what I\u2019m about to tell you. This is what WORKS for me. In my honest opinion, if you\u2019re not doing these 2 things your missing out on a ton of money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thing 1: Free Shipping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not too long ago Etsy announced that they were going to prioritize shops that offer free shipping on orders of $35USD or more. This means exactly what it sounds like.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t offer the free shipping Etsy will knock your items down in the search in favor for items\/shops that offer free shipping. This announcement caused a huge uproar in the Etsy community.\u00a0 There were sellers that were livid about this and posting all kinds of negative things about Etsy for doing this. Some sellers flat out refused (which you can do) and some left Etsy all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I opted to offer the free shipping.\u00a0 It\u2019s just a setting you turn off or on. I raised my product prices a bit to cover the offset (here\u2019s a post I wrote<\/a> about how to do that) and I moved on with my day knowing Etsy was still going to give my shop priority. Why did I just jump on board without a concern at all? Well because Etsy aint dumb!\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etsy is a giant in Ecommerce.\u00a0 No matter what you\u2019re looking to buy, if you type it into a search engine you will see Etsy listings pull up. Etsy has a highly skilled marketing team and they know what they\u2019re doing.\u00a0 They knew free shipping was expected by online consumers and they knew they had to get onboard. So how do you get millions of individual sellers to offer free shipping because it\u2019s what\u2019s best for everyone? You reward them for doing so\u2026.simple! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etsy wants you to succeed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Etsy doesn\u2019t want their sellers to fail; they want you to\nhave a successful Etsy shop because when you make money, \u00a0Etsy makes money. I trust that Etsy knows\nbetter how to make money than I do because they have a whole team devoted to\nit. Not to mention over a million dollar budget to put towards marketing.\u00a0 If Etsy says, \u201cHey, we\u2019ve done some research\nand we\u2019re going to roll out some new policies based on this research.\u201d I say\n\u201cThanks Etsy, good looking out.\u00a0 I\u2019m on\nboard!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Funny side note, I started writing this post on 2\/25\/2020\nand on 2\/26\/2020 Etsy announced the new offsite ads program.\u00a0 So of course I jumped right on board and\nthankfully hadn\u2019t posted this yet so I was able to update it with the new\noffsite ads info.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thing 2: Etsy Promoted Listings and Offsite Ads Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You can pay to promote your listings.\u00a0 This is separate from being a preferred shop by offering free shipping.\u00a0 Promoted listings are basically ads you take out on your items to be promoted within Etsy and or outside of Etsy on sites such as Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Google and Bing.\u00a0 There have been recent changes to how Etsy handles promoted listings.\u00a0 Previously you would choose a daily budget (just whatever you felt comfortable spending on ads every day) and you\u2019d choose the listings you wanted to promote.\u00a0 Etsy would then source out your ads within Etsy and also to Google Shopping. When your daily budget ran out, they\u2019d stop showing your ads.\u00a0 Easy Peasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Etsy is offering 2 different methods for your ads.\u00a0 You can do Etsy promoted listings just like before. \u00a0Select your budget, select the listings you want to promote and Etsy will promote them within the Etsy platform. The new method is the offsite ads program.\u00a0 This is where Etsy will pay to market your listings on other platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Google and Bing. Etsy sets the budget and pays for all of the ads upfront.\u00a0 You only pay if you get a sale and then it\u2019s simply a set percentage of the sale.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would you want to participate in ads at all?\u00a0 <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It is super important for your listings to be shown in the first 3-4 pages of the search results.\u00a0 Most people will NOT go past 5 pages when searching for an item.\u00a0 Beyond that, most people associate with the first few items they see and then compare everything else to them. Paying for promoted listings will put your item at the top of the search in the Ad section. There are some tips and tricks when it comes to choosing what listings to promote and how much you should spend.\u00a0 Be looking for an article on that coming up soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etsy is not a \u201cset it and forget it\u201d platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Remember earlier when I said Etsy takes some work? Well it\u2019s\ndaily work.\u00a0 You have to visit your Etsy\nshop daily and put in some time.\u00a0 Believe\nit or not Etsy is actually paying attention to YOU. They note your activity\nwithin your shop.\u00a0 They take note of how\noften you log in, how often you create new listings, how often you edit and\nupdate listings and so much more.\u00a0 If\nEtsy sees you coming in every day and working on your shop they start moving\nyou up in search results.\u00a0 If they see\nthat you never log on or do any kind of maintenance to your shop, they drop you\nin search results.\u00a0 Having a successful\nEtsy shop takes time and dedication. Know this and accept it before you start\nyour Etsy shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
