DIY Mason Jar Sconce

Mason Jar Crafts are popping up everywhere are they’re here to stay. They are the staple of farmhouse décor and making a Mason Jar Sconce is really easy. They look intimidating because of the wood but I promise, you CAN make them yourself and you don’t even need any special tools. Let’s just dive right in.  Here are the materials you’ll need to make a Mason Jar Sconce:

  • Mason Jars
  • Twine
  • 1 X 6 Wood from your local hardware store (cut into 1 foot pieces)
  • Fairy Lights
  • Picture Hangers
  • Decorative Hooks
  • Wood Stain
  • Gloves
  • Old Rags
  • Nails/Screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Chalk Paint
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Tape

Step One: Making the wood sconce

Cut your 1X6 into 1 foot pieces (Or have your local hardware store do it for you. They’ll do it for free) and sand down the ends where the cuts were made.  If you wood is rough you may want to sand down the surface some too. Always rub in the same direction as the wood grain and never against it.

Get an old rag and dip it into your wood stain. Rub the stain up and down your wood sconce until you have full coverage and it’s as dark as you’d like it to be.  Then take a clean part of the rag and wipe the stain off. This step is important to achieve a wood stain look rather than your wood looking like it’s painted.

Step Two: Making the Mason Jar Sconce Hanger

You’ll use the twine to make a hanger. Measure out 12” of twine and loop it across the top of your mason jar leaving about an inch on either side (see photo 1  below).  Tape down the sides and then use additional twine to wrap around the lip of the mason jar and tie it into place (see photo 2 below). Then secure each side by making knots (see photo 3 below).

Step Three: Decorating your Mason Jar

You’ll want to decorate your Mason Jar sconce with flowers and either fairy lights or distressed chalk paint.  If you choose to paint your jar, you should do this BEFORE you make the twine hanger. Here’s a video that shows how to paint mason jars.

For the flowers just pick a pretty floral pick from your local craft store and cut off as much as you want to go in your jar. Then unravel your fairy lights and push them down into the jar.  Hide the battery switch in the flowers so it’s not visible.

Step Four: Hanging your Mason Jar

First you need to put the picture hanger on the back of your wood sconce.  Measure down an inch and draw a line across your board. Use this lien as a guide to put the hanger on straight. Simply line up the hook and nail it into place.

Turn the wood sconce over and attach your decorative hook. The placement of this will depend greatly on the hook you choose.  Just pick what looks best to you and center the hook. Then attach with either a nail or screws, whatever your hook requires.

Hang your mason jar from the decorative hook and you’re all done. Enjoy your new Mason Jar Sconces or use them as gifts.
