If you’ve ever wondered how to make those bold, arched pull away text designs you see in trendy sports, senior, and school spirit graphics… this tutorial is going to be your new favorite! In today’s video, I walk you step by step through how to create this arched pull away text effect right inside Canva, using one of my favorite tools, Typecraft, to form the arch, and Canva’s Background Remover and Magic Eraser to carve out the pull away look.

What You’ll Learn in the Video
In this tutorial, you’ll learn exactly how to recreate the arched pull away text style shown in the samples above. It’s the perfect effect for designing:
- School spirit shirts
- Senior designs
- Cheer and dance graphics
- Team merch
- Sports templates
- And any bold varsity-style artwork
Here’s what we cover step by step:
Step 1: Create the Arch Using Typecraft
We start by typing your word or phrase into Typecraft and selecting the arch style you want.
You’ll learn how to:
- Pick the right font for that varsity or block letter look
- Adjust the curvature of the arch
- Export your text for Canva
This gives you the perfectly shaped text that you’ll use to build the pull away effect.
Step 2: Import Your Text Into Canva
Once your text is uploaded into Canva, I show you how to position it, color it, and set it up for editing. This step is key because it prepares the design for carving out the pull-away shapes.
Step 3: Use Background Remover to Cut Out the Arch
Next, we use Canva’s Background Remover to clean up the text so you’re only working with the shape itself. This gives you a crisp, editable base to begin sculpting the design.
Step 4: Use Magic Eraser to Create the Pull Away Effect
This is where the magic happens!
You’ll learn how to:
- Carefully erase the upper portion of each letter
- Match the pull away spacing
- Create that dimensional “peeled up” look
- Keep your edges clean and consistent
By erasing selective areas, you get that bold, layered varsity style effect that jumps off the design.
Perfect For
- Canva beginners and experienced designers
- Etsy and POD creators
- School spirit and sports designers
- Anyone who loves bold, trendy typography
