Patterned outline text is one of the easiest ways to create bold, eye catching designs. In this tutorial, I’m showing you exactly how to do it in Canva.
This technique is perfect for:
• Tshirt and sweatshirt designs
• Etsy PNGs and digital products
• Social media graphics
• Trendy boutique style designs

In this tutorial, we’ll create layered outline text and then take it a step further by filling one of those outline layers with a pattern using Canva’s FrameSpark app.
Step 1: Add Your Text
We start by adding the base text for the design.
In the video, I walk through:
• Choosing a font that works well with outlines
• Adjusting spacing and sizing
• Setting up your text for layering
This creates the foundation for your patterned outline design.
Step 2: Create Multiple Outline Layers
Next, we build out the layered outline effect.
In this step, you’ll learn how to:
• Duplicate your text
• Add two separate outline layers
• Adjust thickness and spacing for each layer
This layered look is what gives your design that bold, dimensional style.
Step 3: Turn an Outline Into a Frame
Now we take things to the next level.
Using the FrameSpark app in Canva, I show you how to:
• Convert one outline layer into a frame
• Prepare it to hold patterns or textures
• Keep everything aligned with your original text
This is the key step that allows you to create pattern filled outlines.
Step 4: Add a Pattern Fill
Once your outline is a frame, you can fill it with any pattern you like.
In the tutorial, I demonstrate how to:
• Add a pattern or digital paper
• Adjust placement inside the frame
• Create a cohesive color look
This step is where your design really starts to stand out.
Watch the full tutorial below to follow along step by step.
Step 5: Layer Everything Together
Finally, we bring all the layers together.
You’ll learn how to:
• Stack your text and outline layers correctly
• Align everything for a clean finish
• Create a polished, professional design
The final result is a trendy patterned outline text design that’s perfect for selling or sharing.
Final Thoughts
Once you learn this technique, you can use it for so many different styles and trends.
Try experimenting with:
• Different pattern types (stripes, florals, checkered, etc.)
• Color combinations
• Font styles
• Seasonal or trending phrases
This is a simple method that can quickly turn into high selling digital designs.
