Cute Character Graphics in Affinity

Cute character graphics are one of the biggest design trends on Etsy right now, and in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create them in Affinity!

Create cute character graphics in Affinity

If you watched my Canva tutorial, you already know how easy it is to build these fun designs using Canva elements. In this video, I’m taking things a step further by showing you how I create the arms, legs, hands, and feet directly inside Affinity.

We’ll start with a piece of clipart and transform it into playful cute character graphics that’s perfect for PNG designs, POD products, and digital downloads.

Watch the full tutorial below to follow along step by step.

Start with Great Clipart

Every great character starts with great artwork.

For this tutorial, I begin with a finished piece of clipart and use it as the base for my design.

If you’d like to learn how I create my own clipart using AI, I also have a complete tutorial that walks you through generating beautiful illustrations from scratch.

Creating your own clipart gives you complete creative control and makes it easy to build character collections that all share the same artistic style.

Step 1: Draw the Arms and Legs

The first step is bringing your artwork to life. Using Affinity’s Pen Tool, I draw simple stick style arms and legs. This technique works well because it creates clean, editable vector lines that can easily be adjusted until they look just right.

In the tutorial, I show you how to:

  • Draw smooth curved arms
  • Create playful leg poses
  • Adjust the curves for a natural look
  • Position the limbs so they match the personality of your character

Sometimes the smallest changes in arm placement can completely change the expression and energy of the design.

Step 2: Create the Feet

Once the limbs are finished, it’s time to add the feet. Instead of drawing them by hand, I use the Ellipse Tool to create simple rounded feet. This keeps everything consistent and gives the characters the clean, whimsical look that’s so popular in boutique style graphics.

Step 3: Add Hands and Fingers

To finish the character, I use the Pencil Tool to sketch in simple fingers. These small details only take a few seconds to add, but they give each character much more personality and movement. You’ll be surprised how much life a few simple lines can add to a design.

Why I Like Creating Characters in Affinity

One of the biggest advantages of using Affinity is that everything stays editable.

Because the arms, legs, and hands are vector objects, you can easily:

  • Move them
  • Resize them
  • Adjust the curves
  • Change the pose
  • Reuse them on future designs

Once you’ve created a few characters, you’ll find yourself building them much faster.

Endless Design Possibilities

After you learn this technique, you’ll start seeing character possibilities everywhere.

Try creating:

  • Holiday ornaments
  • Pumpkins
  • Ghosts
  • Presents
  • Candy
  • School supplies
  • Sports equipment
  • Food characters
  • Seasonal clipart

Almost any piece of clipart can become a fun character with just a few simple additions.

Final Thoughts

Cute character graphics are such a fun way to give ordinary clipart a little extra personality. With just a few simple tools in Affinity, you can turn almost any illustration into a playful, eye catching design that’s perfect for Etsy, POD, and digital products. Once you start creating them, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to make an entire collection!
