Fall Etsy Design Trends: What’s In & What’s On the Way Out

Fall design season is here, but the trends we’re seeing on Etsy look a little different this year!

In this week’s tutorial, I’m breaking down the Fall Etsy design trends I’m seeing gain momentum right now plus a few trends that appear to be losing steam.

Fall Etsy Design Trends

We’re talking textures, patterns, skeletons, arched typography, halftones, and more. And just as importantly, I’ll show you how to take inspiration from these trends without simply recreating what everyone else is already selling.

If you’re creating PNGs, POD designs, or other digital products for Etsy this fall, this is a great place to start your design research.

Trend #1: Texture + Patterns

One of the biggest shifts I’m seeing is toward designs that have a lot more visual texture and personality.

Distressed and imperfect textures are showing up everywhere, giving otherwise simple graphics a worn, vintage feel.

We’re also seeing fun patterns incorporated directly into designs rather than simply being used as backgrounds.

Think:

  • Checks and checkerboards
  • Stripes
  • Dots
  • Distressed textures
  • Patterns inside text and graphics

The key here is layering. Instead of relying on one big graphic or phrase, designers are combining simple elements to create something much more interesting.

Trend #2: The Skeleton Takeover

Skeletons are EVERYWHERE this fall.

But we’re moving beyond the traditional Halloween skeleton.

I’m seeing skeletons incorporated into all kinds of themes, hobbies, occupations, sports, and seasonal sayings. That makes this trend incredibly versatile because you can take the basic skeleton concept and adapt it to your particular niche.

Rather than copying a skeleton design you find during your research, ask yourself:

What could my skeleton be doing?

That’s where you can take the trend and turn it into something that feels much more original.

Trend #3: Arched Words

Arched typography continues to show up in trendy Etsy designs, especially when it’s combined with some of the other trends we’re seeing.

Instead of plain text across the top or bottom of a design, try arching your wording around your main graphic.

And this is where you can start combining trends.

An arched word filled with a pattern or distressed texture immediately gives you a very different look than basic solid colored text.

Trend #4: Halftone

Halftone is another effect I’m seeing work its way into trendy designs.

This dotted, slightly retro effect is a fun way to add dimension without making a design feel overly complicated.

You can use halftone:

  • Behind text
  • Inside graphics
  • As shading
  • As a background element
  • To give an illustration a retro or printed look

It’s one of those small details that can make a fairly simple design feel much more current.

What Are We Moving Away From?

When you’re looking at Fall Etsy design trends, your trend research shouldn’t only about figuring out what’s gaining popularity.

It’s also important to pay attention to the design styles that may be losing momentum.

A few things I’m seeing less excitement around include:

Lace inspired designs, heavy glitter effects, and the goose/duck trend.

That doesn’t mean you can never create another design using these elements!

Trends don’t disappear overnight, and there can absolutely still be buyers for them. But if you’re deciding where to spend your time creating new products, I would be cautious about building an entire new collection around a trend that already appears to be cooling off.

Don’t Copy Trends. Use Them as Ingredients.

This is probably the most important takeaway from this tutorial.

Trend research isn’t about finding a successful Etsy listing and recreating it.

Instead, look for the individual ingredients that keep repeating.

Maybe you notice:

arched text + checkerboard + distressed texture

Or:

skeleton + niche phrase + halftone

Those ingredients tell you much more than any individual listing.

Take one or two of those trending elements, combine them with your own niche, wording, graphics, colors, or style, and create something that feels like your design.

That’s how trend research becomes useful instead of turning into a copying exercise.

Final Thoughts

Fall is one of the biggest design seasons for Etsy sellers, and there’s still plenty of opportunity to create products that feel fresh.

Right now, I would especially keep an eye on:

Texture and patterns, skeletons, arched typography, and halftone effects.

But remember, the goal isn’t to squeeze every trend into one design!

Use trend research as a starting point, choose the elements that make sense for your audience, and then put your own spin on them.
