If you’ve ever tried to fill Canva letters with a pattern, you’ve probably run into one frustrating problem: the digital paper may be cute, but that doesn’t mean the pattern actually looks good inside your letters.
Maybe the part of the pattern you wanted gets cut off. Maybe the scale is completely wrong. Or maybe you spend forever repositioning the paper inside each letter trying to make it look right.

In this week’s tutorial, I’m introducing a different way to shop for and use digital papers when you’re creating patterned alphabet designs in Canva. My friend Chris from Me2YouDigitals on Etsy and I have started creating Alpha Fill Papers specifically for this purpose.

The Problem with Regular Digital Paper
Traditional digital paper is usually designed to look good as an entire page.
And there’s nothing wrong with that if you’re using it as a background or for a project where you can see most of the paper.
But it’s different if you want to fill Canva letters.
When you drag a digital paper into an alphabet frame, Canva only displays the small portion of the paper that falls inside that letter.
Suddenly, the placement of the design matters a LOT.
You might have an adorable paper covered in pumpkins, bows, footballs, florals, or school spirit elements, but once you put it inside a letter, you may barely see any of them.
That’s why Chris and I started approaching digital paper differently.
Meet Alpha Fill Papers
Alpha Fill Papers are digital papers specifically designed to fill Canva letters and frames.
Instead of thinking:
“How can I make a cute digital paper?”
We’re thinking:
“What does this paper need to look like when only ONE LETTER is visible?”
That’s an important difference.
The pattern, scale, spacing, and placement are designed with alphabet fills in mind so you can use one paper to fill one letter and get a finished look without fighting with the pattern.

Because the paper has been created specifically with letter fills in mind, you can focus on choosing the pattern that looks best with your design instead of endlessly repositioning a traditional digital paper trying to find a usable section.
Repeat the process with the rest of your letters, mixing and matching coordinating papers as you go.

Stop Shopping for Digital Paper the Same Way
This is probably the biggest takeaway I want you to get from this tutorial.
If your end goal is pattern filled lettering, don’t just ask:
“Is this a cute digital paper?”
Ask:
“Will this pattern actually look good inside ONE letter?”
Those are two completely different things.
A beautiful full page digital paper isn’t necessarily a great alphabet fill. And a great Alpha Fill Paper doesn’t need to function like a traditional seamless pattern.
It’s designed for a different job.
