How to Add Texture to Designs in Canva

If your designs feel a little too flat or digital, adding texture is one of the easiest ways to instantly give them a more realistic, professional look.

Add texture to a design

In this tutorial, I’ll show you two simple ways to add texture in Canva:

• A soft paper texture for a natural printed look
• A grunge texture for a distressed, worn effect

These techniques are perfect for:

• T-shirt and sweatshirt designs
• Etsy PNGs and digital products
• POD graphics
• Trendy boutique style designs

Watch the full tutorial below to follow along step by step.

Method 1: Adding a Paper Texture

First, we’ll create a soft, realistic effect using a paper texture.

In the tutorial, I show you how to:

• Add a paper texture over your design
• Adjust the transparency
• Blend the texture so it looks natural

Lowering the transparency helps your design look like it’s actually printed on paper instead of sitting on top of it.

This is a great option if you want a clean, subtle texture.

Method 2: Creating a Distressed Grunge Effect

Next, we take things a step further with a grunge texture.

In this step, you’ll learn how to:

• Add a grunge texture over your design
• Use Canva’s background remover
• Erase parts of the texture from your design

This creates a distressed, worn look that’s perfect for:

• Vintage style designs
• Trendy t shirts
• Rustic or grunge aesthetics

When to Use Each Texture Style

Both methods are simple, but they create very different results.

Use paper texture when you want:
• A soft, subtle finish
• A realistic printed look
• Clean designs with depth

Use grunge texture when you want:
• A distressed or vintage feel
• More character and texture
• A bold, worn in style

Final Thoughts

Adding texture is one of the fastest ways to upgrade your designs without changing the entire layout.

Try experimenting with:

• Different texture types
• Transparency levels
• Layering multiple textures
• Combining texture with trendy fonts and graphics

Once you start using texture, you’ll notice a big difference in how your designs look and feel.
