If you’ve ever wondered how to make digital paper for Etsy, POD, or your own creative projects, you’re in the right place!

In this beginner friendly Affinity tutorial, I’ll show you how to create seamless repeating patterns that can be exported as beautiful digital paper. Whether you’re designing for scrapbooking, invitations, sublimation, or digital downloads, learning how to make seamless patterns is a valuable skill.
In this tutorial, I’ll demonstrate the exact workflow I use in Affinity, including a simple technique for moving artwork across the canvas to create a perfectly repeating pattern.
Watch the full tutorial below and follow along step by step.
Why Create Your Own Digital Paper?
Digital paper is one of the most versatile digital products you can make.
Once you know how to make digital paper, you can use your seamless patterns for:
- Scrapbooking
- Invitations
- Party printables
- Sublimation projects
- POD products
- Etsy digital downloads
- Backgrounds for PNG designs
Best of all, one clipart set can be turned into dozens of unique pattern designs.
Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas
To begin, I create a 3000 × 3000 pixel artboard.
Using a square canvas makes it easy to build a seamless repeating pattern while maintaining high quality digital paper that can be used for a variety of projects.
Step 2: Arrange Your Clipart
For this tutorial, I’m using a collection of Halloween clipart that I created with AI.
I arrange the clipart across the canvas while leaving room for elements that will wrap around the edges.
If you’d like to learn how I created this clipart, I also have a complete tutorial showing how to generate your own AI clipart from scratch.
Step 3: Move the Edge Elements to Create a Seamless Repeat
This is the most important step when creating seamless digital paper.
As you begin placing your clipart around the canvas, some of your illustrations will extend past the edges of the artboard. Those elements need to continue perfectly on the opposite side so your pattern repeats without visible seams.
In this tutorial, I use a 3000 × 3000 pixel artboard, so the process is very straightforward.
Moving Left to Right
If part of an object extends off the left edge of the canvas:
- Select the object and duplicate it.
- Open the Transform panel.
- In the X Position field, type “+3000”
Affinity automatically adds 3000 pixels to the object’s current X position, placing an identical copy on the opposite side of the canvas.
Moving Right to Left
If an object extends off the right edge:
- Select the object and duplicate it.
- Open the Transform panel.
- In the X Position field, type “-=3000”
This moves the object exactly 3000 pixels to the left, creating the matching edge for your seamless repeat.
Moving Top to Bottom
If part of your clipart extends beyond the top of the canvas:
- Select the object and duplicate it.
- In the Y Position field of the Transform panel, type “+3000”
This places the matching artwork along the bottom edge.
Moving Bottom to Top
If your artwork extends off the bottom edge:
- Select the object and duplicate it.
- In the Y Position field, type “-=3000”
This moves the artwork to the top edge, completing the seamless repeat vertically.
Step 4: Fill the Remaining Space
Once all of your edge pieces have matching copies on the opposite side of the canvas, you’ll probably notice empty areas throughout the middle of your design. This is where you can start filling the remaining space with additional clipart.
As you add new elements, continue checking for balance by:
- Varying the size of your clipart
- Rotating elements so the pattern feels more natural
- Spacing illustrations evenly throughout the design
- Avoiding large empty gaps or clusters of similar objects
If any of these new pieces cross the edge of the artboard, simply repeat the same process using the Transform panel and the ±3000 pixel method.
By the time you’ve filled the center and wrapped all of the edge elements, you’ll have a seamless repeating pattern that’s ready to export as digital paper.
Export Your Digital Paper
Once your pattern is complete, you’re ready to export it as digital paper.
Your finished file can be used for:
- Etsy digital paper packs
- Printable designs
- Craft projects
- POD backgrounds
- Personal creative projects
Final Thoughts
Learning how to make digital paper is one of the best ways to get more value from your clipart.
Instead of using each illustration only once, you can transform an entire clipart collection into multiple seamless pattern designs that are perfect for selling or using in your own projects.
With a little practice, you’ll be creating beautiful digital paper in no time.
