Working with SVG files in Cricut Design Space is not always plain and simple. Sometimes the SVG you’re wanting to use needs a little editing or has some flaws in it. There’s almost always a way to fix or edit a SVG file in Cricut Design Space. I’ve put this post together with a tutorial and video on how to upload and edit a SVG file in Cricut Design Space.
What is a SVG file
First off, what is a SVG file. SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic. They are more commonly known as cut files in the Cricut world since these are the files you upload into design space that come ready to cut, well for the most part anyway. You don’t have to remove any of the background or unwanted portions of the design.
How do I upload a SVG file
First: to upload a SVG file simply purchase and save the file you’re wanting to use to your desktop or a folder of your choice. Make sure to name it something you will remember and recognize as SVG files do not show a thumbnail photo.
Second: Open Cricut Design Space and select “New Project”. Once the project is open head down to the bottom of the left side tool bar and select “Upload”.
Third: When the upload screen comes up select “Upload Image” then you will either browse for your image or drag and drop it into Design Space. (The image should appear in a view box with a blue and white checkered background. This indicates there is nothing behind your image. Everything showing blue and white checkers is going to be blank or empty when you start working with your design. This is exactly what you want from a SVG.) Next, name your file and hit save. Your file is then moved into your upload section along with all other files you’ve uploaded.
Fourth: Select the SVG you just uploaded into Design Space and hit “Insert Image”. You now have the SVG in your project and you can work with it however you’d like.
How do I edit a SVG file in Cricut Design Space
Sometimes, you’re going to need to do some editing. I have a video linked below to show you how to do some basic editing so you’ll want to watch that as it can get a little too detailed for a text version but I will give you some tips and tricks here.
Tip one: If you want to do any editing AT ALL to your file the very first thing you must do is UNGROUP the file. To do this, select the file (highlight the file) and go over to the right side menu bar and hit “ungroup” in the top section of the layers panel.
Tip two: When the file is ungrouped you can then use the eye icons to hide any layer of the design you’re not wanting to use.
Tip three: You can also use the contour tool at the bottom of the right side tool bar to remove any small, unattached pieces from your design. More on how to use the contour tool head over to this post.
So that’s pretty much all on how to upload a SVG to Cricut Design Space. Check out the video below with more detail on how to edit a SVG file in Cricut Design Space once you have it uploaded.
