DIY Holiday Decor

I absolutely love to make my own DIY Holiday Decor. It makes me feel so accomplished when someone comes over and says “I love that! Where did you get it?” and I can say “I made it!” And you know what…most of the time they ask me to make them one too so I get a little extra cash on the side which is always welcome during the holiday season. Today I’m going to show you how to make DIY Holiday canvas panels that can either be hung or placed on a table. Let’s get started.

First of all let’s go over the supplies you’ll need:

  • Fabric of your choice (about 1/2 a yard for 3 panels)
  • Holiday themed accessories like buttons or leaves
  • Canvas panels in different sizes (I use 10X10 and 12X12)
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Sticks
  • Twine
  • Cardboard Picture Easel or command strips

Making your DIY Holiday Decor

Once you get all your supplies together it’s time to start putting it all together. The first thing you’ll want to do is wrap all 3 panels with fabric. Measure out about 1.5 to 2 inches around all sides of your panel and cut out your fabric. Next you’ll glue it all down.  Place your panel face down on your fabric and run a line of hot glue along the top edge of your panel then stick the fabric down to it.  Continue this around all four sides and then go back in and fold your corners to make them neat. (See photos below.)

After you have your panels covered in fabric it’s time to wrap the twine on your 2 side panels.  It’s up to you how many times you want to wrap the twine around and where you want to put it.  I typically do 3 passes of twine and go 3 inches down from the top and 3 inches across from the side. Once you’ve wrapped your twine around just tie it off in the back.

After the twine is on and looking good play around with your buttons or whatever kind of accessories you chose to go on your panels. Place them and use your hot glue gun to glue them and then you’re done with your side panels. (Make sure you’re only doing the side panels right now.  We’ll get to the center panel next)

Making the center panel

Okay so you’ve got all 3 panels covered in fabric and you have twine on the 2 side panels.  It’s time to make your center panel. Get that fancy holiday pick and fluff it up and twist it around until you have it looking just the way you want (see the video for how to do this) then hot glue it down to the middle of your panel.  Just put a generous amount of glue down the stem and stick it to the panel then reinforce each side of the stem with more hot glue.  You can also glue down larger parts of your pick like pinecones or leaves.

Glue down your pick

Once your pick is glued down you can then go back and wrap your twine making sure to cover the stem of the pick. Wrap just like you did on the side panels and just make sure to arrange the twine in a manner that works with your pick.  Glue down the twine where needed to keep it from separating or pocking up.

Finish it off

You now have all 3 of your panels made and it’s time to finish them off by either attaching the picture easel for placing on a table or command strips for hanging on a wall.

For the picture easels just assemble them by folding out the sides and pushing down the middle circle.  Peel off the self adhesive paper backing and put a good amount of hot glue over it.  (These do have adhesive on the back but it’s not strong enough to hold over time.  You’ll want to reinforce with hot glue.) Place the easel down on the back of the canvas panel going under the twine where you can and over it where you can’t.

For the command strips just place a strip in the top right corner and the top left corner of each panel and stick to your wall. That’s all there is to it.  With just a few supplies and about 15 minutes of your time you’ve got your very own DIY Holiday Decor that’s sure to turn heads and get a ton of compliments.
